Dining room makeover: DIY wall décor with wall panels

Decor, DIY

At last, the final piece of the puzzle for decorating my dining room: DIY wall décor with custom panels covered with grass cloth! After I made my banquette by building a DIY bench and an upholstered wall panel, I needed something to fill in my big blank wall in my dining room so after looking at a few blank wall ideas, I decided to go with wall panels and add some mood lighting with wall sconces and some DY driftwood art. The best part is that I didn’t have to deal with any electrical wiring: I used a remote receiver and wireless wall switch that I hung with Glue Dots sheets so I could easily remove them when I move out. I love how my dining room is now a warm and inviting place to entertain friends.

Love the new look of your dinning room. Coordinates nicely with the kitchen space. I am a little embarrassed to admit I didn’t know about the wireless wall switch. What a great idea. I can think of a couple of rooms I could really use something like that in, especially if I make your wall sconces. Thanks again for sharing such great ideas.

Thank you so much! Aren’t those wireless switches great? I was so happy when I discovered them – it really opens up so many lighting possibilities, especially when you’re renting!

    Hello Isabelle,

I would like to create a lighting wall panel, which provides more light, with it’s entire surface. How could I make one, so that I could also paint on it my own art?

    Thanking you in advance

Do you have a tutorial on the chairs that you did? Where did you get the fabric and how did you upholster the chairs? I just bought the same table and chairs and would like to do what you have done. I LOVE your channel and website. Thank you for all the great DIY and rethinking of space.

    Hi Isabelle,

Thank you for sharing all the details of your ideas and DIY projects. I’m making the wall panels but with some changes. Instead of glasscloth, I want to use jute cloth and instead of plywood, i used hardboard. I’m little worried about the weight of the panels specially after adding moldings. Do you recommend key holes and screws or the french cleat?

Hi Maryam, You’re welcome and it’s great to hear that you’re making the wall panels! I would recommend the french cleats – they are the easiest to use and they hold a lot of weight. I’ve used these ones here that hold 60 lbs and really like them: http://amzn.to/1OIWYvG
